Filming Locations You Can Actually Visit

One of the greatest joys of loving a drama is revisiting the places where its most memorable scenes were filmed.

Long after the final episode ends, the emotions remain. We remember the conversations, the music, the scenery, and even the silence between two characters. Those memories slowly fade with time, and perhaps that is why many of us choose to visit filming locations.

We spend our time and money traveling there, fully aware that the original sets may have been dismantled and that much of the cinematic beauty was created through careful camera angles and visual effects.

Yet something magical still happens. As we walk through those places, forgotten memories quietly return. Scenes we thought we had forgotten come back to life. The emotions we felt while watching the drama begin to surface once again.

Jeongseon, Gangwon Province

Where Yoon Se-ri Literally "Crash-Landed"

The drama begins with one unforgettable accident.  While enjoying a paragliding flight, Yoon Se-ri is suddenly caught in a violent tornado that carries her across the border into North Korea.  Those dramatic mountain scenes were filmed in Jeongseon, a county in Gangwon Province known for its rugged forests and steep valleys.

The untouched landscape perfectly conveyed the feeling of entering an unfamiliar world.

Standing among these mountains today, it is easy to understand why the production team chose this location. The scenery feels both breathtaking and slightly intimidating—exactly the atmosphere the story required.

Hoengseong, Gangwon Province

The North Korean Military Village

 If there is one location that truly brought North Korea to life, it was the military village set built in Mukgye-ri, Hoengseong.

Captain Ri Jeong-hyeok's home, the houses of the Fifth Company soldiers, and many of the neighborhood scenes were all created here.

This was where viewers fell in love not only with the main characters but also with the unforgettable supporting cast—the cheerful soldiers, the curious village women, and the warm sense of community that made the fictional village feel surprisingly real.

Although much of the set has since been removed, fans still visit the area to imagine the streets where so many memorable moments unfolded.

Binaeseom Island, Chungju

The Most Emotional Farewell

 Among all the Korean filming locations, Binaeseom Island may have left the strongest emotional impression on me. Located just about two hours from Seoul, it is also one of the easiest places for visitors to reach. This peaceful riverside island became the setting for one of the drama's most touching scenes. Before returning to South Korea, Se-ri spends one final outing with Captain Ri and the soldiers who had quietly become her family. There are no elaborate buildings here.  Only endless reeds, silver grass swaying in the wind, and the gentle flow of the Namhan River. Perhaps that simplicity is exactly what made the farewell so unforgettable. As the characters laughed together like children, viewers already knew that separation was approaching. The contrast between joyful moments and inevitable goodbye made the scene even more heartbreaking.

If you visit, try to arrive just before sunset.  As the evening light turns the silver reeds into shades of gold and crimson, the landscape becomes every bit as beautiful as it appeared on screen.

Tangeum Lake Rainbow Road, Chungju

Just beside Binaeseom lies another memorable filming location. Tangeum Lake Rainbow Road appeared several times throughout the series, but its most memorable moment belongs to Seo Dan and Gu Seung-jun. After Ri Jeong-hyeok leaves for South Korea, Seo Dan struggles with heartbreak. It is here that Gu Seung-jun sincerely comforts her, allowing their own unexpected romance to begin. The location became especially beautiful in the evening, with lights reflecting across the water and creating one of the drama's most romantic nighttime settings. Recognized as one of Korea's 100 Best Night Views, the walking trail is especially worth visiting after sunset.
